There is a very important word in Danish, hygge (hoogah), that does not translate directly into English. The closest we can come is "cozy". Hygge is an important concept in Denmark where the winters are long and dark. Hygge is about creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for friends and family. Penny Forrest tries to capture this in her work by creating cozy and inviting spaces for viewers to di...ve into.

Penny finds she is increasingly inspired by the everyday and ordinary. She seeks beauty in the mundane tasks and clutter of daily life - the little things we take for granted can mean the most and she tries to share that vision with other like-minded souls.

Big Blue Fish Fine Art by artist Penny Forrest - Description: This piece, like most of my paintings, is mostly from my imagination. But it was inspired by a 1950's diner that had a big flying fish on the wall. This is one of two pieces inspired by that diner. (See also "Home of the 5 cent Bottomless Cup of Coffee")

Come Fly with Me Fine Art by artist Penny Forrest - Description: Remember the days when flying was glamorous? I do. Jacob Plays the Piano Like a Muppet Fine Art by artist Penny Forrest - Description: This piece is part of the Shangri LaLa series inspired by my daughter's home. High in the Sierra foothills she lives a creative and busy life filled with art, music, and good food. For many years she lived completely off the grid using solar panels and wind for electricity and wood for heat. She grows most of her own food and is a fantastic cook. Her house is filled with art, funky antiques and eclectic clutter scattered artfully everywhere you look and interspersed with plants and flowers from the garden. Every time I visit I find something to inspire me.

"Jacob Plays the Piano Like a Muppet" was created after taking a couple of my Danish cousins to visit Shangri LaLa. After another amazing dinner cousin Jacob played for us - banging on the piano like a Muppet. A good time was had by all as always.
